The shallow recess (I found 1/16th adequate) greatly adds to the strength. Those to whom I give boxes of exotic woods and novel burl veneers seem to appreciate the splash of visible brass.
I've been making small boxes of all kinds and shapes for years. Over that time, the Brusso stop hinges have been my go to hinge for many reasons. Unlike other hinges these are extremely sturdy, will hold up to time and look great. I use them as part of the design of my boxes and I don't have to mortise them which save time and effort.

As with every Brusso product that I have used they scream quality and have an appearance that are 2nd to none. I spend a lot of time, effort and use the best lumber I can get for my projects and I am not going to ruin it by installing 2nd rate hardware. I know with all Brusso hardware it will last as long as the heirloom pieces that I make. And they are simple to install when you get the templates.
