How to choose a pivot hinge
Offset or center
An offset pivot sets the door's pivot point off the edge so it swings clear of the case. A center pivot runs the axis through the door itself. Pick by how you want the door to sit and swing.
Check the swing
Pivots turn on a single pin top and bottom, so the door swings free — no stop, no chain. If you need the lid or door to hold at an angle, you want a stop hinge instead.
Mortise top and bottom
Each pivot mortises into the top and bottom of the door and the case. Lay the cut out carefully so the pin line is true and the gap stays even down the face.

The pivot hinge guide
How to lay out and mortise offset and center pivots - the measurements that matter, step by step.
An offset pivot, or knife, hinge carries the door on a single pin top and bottom. There's no barrel and no leaf stamped across the face - from the front the door looks like it swings on nothing. Choose the offset to suit your door and case.
FAQ
Common questions
What's the difference between an offset and a center pivot?
An offset pivot carries the door on a pin set in from the edge, so the door swings clear of the case. A center pivot mortises into the top and bottom of the door and turns on a single axis, with no side clearance. Choose by how the door needs to clear the opening.
Do pivot hinges show from the front?
Barely. The door rides on a single pin top and bottom, so there's no barrel and no leaf stamped across the face - just a thin brass line at the edge.
Do they come with screws?
Yes. Every set ships with matching solid-brass screws sized for the leaf. Installation templates are sold separately for clean mortising.
