From Sawmill to Showcase: A Vermont Woodworker’s Journey
Share

Last fall, woodworker Stephen Ayotte made his way to Austin, Texas—a city known for its vibrant culture and, as he discovered, its remarkable hardwoods. While visiting a local sawmill, one particular piece of mesquite stood out from the rest. Nestled among stacks of lumber, the No. 2 grade mesquite had a rugged charm and rich character that immediately caught his eye.

Stephen has been building in his Vermont shop for over 30 years, and he’s developed a keen instinct for wood that tells a story. He chose the mesquite not for perfection, but for its personality—the knots, the grain, the unexpected marks that make each piece unique. Back home, he paired it with curly maple, creating a striking contrast that would become the foundation of a handcrafted jewelry box.
When it came time to finish the box, he turned to Brusso’s JB-102 Box Hinges. Precision-machined and Made in the USA, these hinges added a simple, elegant touch that aligned perfectly with his project: build with intention, and let the craftsmanship speak for itself.
