"I'm a retired electrical engineer who now loves to dabble in marquetry embellished boxes of all sorts. This tea box is my marquetry interpretation of “Inume Pass in the Kai Province”, a woodblock print in the series “36 views of Mount Fuji” by the ukiyo-e master, Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849).
The marquetry for this box was made with hand-sawn wood veneers (American holly, Hawaiian koa, quilted maple, Claro walnut and aspen) and further inlaid with semi-precious azurite and malachite stones. The inside top was made with a book-matched panel of spalted maple, with the natural voids filled with crushed azurite and malachite. The box itself was fabricated with solid maple and veneers of highly figured Western big leaf maple. The inside of the box is lined with imported Japanese washi paper. Brusso solid brass hinges and hardware (JB-101) were used, and the box was finished with multiple coats of pure tung oil with a final rub of microcrystalline wax."
